Supernatural vs. psychological
Many people don't believe in demonic posssession, rather they think that all of the symptoms are due to a neurological disorder. Schozophrenia is the most common disorder used in the argument against possession. The 2012 movie, The Devil Inside, is a depiction of these beliefs at work. This movie, said to be based on true events, is about Maria Rossi, who was institutionalized following a botched exorcism where she murdered three people. She was ruled "criminally insane".
It is easy to see the parallel between severe neurological disorders and demonic possession. Here is a comparison of symptoms of each:
While it is easy to see the connection between the two, Pastor Steven Waterhouse, author of "Strength for his People: A Ministry for Families of the Mentally Ill", brings up several characteristics that are easy to differentiate.
1. Aversion to religious artifacts vs literal bodily harm when one touches artifacts. 2. Irrational speech vs rational speech. Schizophrenics commonly babble, however it is generally nonsense or simply noises. Demons speak out, often in ancient languages (called "speaking in tongues") and are completely rational. Though all observers may not recognize the meaning of their words 3. Supernatural knowledge/powers. Many cases of possession include the victim reading minds, and displaying unnatural strength or abilities such as contortion and levitation. There has never been a report of a levitating schizophrenic. 4. Awareness of possession. Many schizophrenics acknowledge voices telling them to do things, or even claim to be possessed. Demons are secretive and would not expose themselves for fear of being cast out. 5. Effects of therapy/medication. No medication or therapy will sedate a possessed individual. If results are seen, they have a mental illness. |
